Elon Musk, the man with more than 236 million followers and a documented inability to stay quiet about anything, allegedly posted that anyone protesting the Trump administration would be suspended from X. “All anti-Trump drama can go to a liberal echo chamber like Threads, Reddit, BlueSky, Instagram, and Facebook,” the post continued, in a tone that sounds exactly like what someone who hates Musk imagines Musk sounds like.
The only problem is that Musk did not post it. There is no record of it on his X account. There is no record of it on archived versions of his account. There is no timestamp, no like count, no repost count. Those things exist on every real post by a man with 236 million followers, because at least one of them would screenshot it before it was deleted. The image that circulated is cropped identically across every version, with the bookmark and send icons cut off at the bottom. That is a fingerprint of a single fabrication, copied and recopied.
If Musk had actually threatened to suspend every Trump critic on X, it would have been the lead story on every news outlet for a week. It was not. The only places that covered it were the fact-checkers explaining that it was fake.
This is the screenshot-as-weapon move. You do not need to hack someone’s account to put words in their mouth. You need an image editor, a screenshot of the real UI, and an audience that already believes the person would say something like that. The fabrication is not designed to fool careful readers. It is designed to be shared by people who want it to be true, fast enough that the correction never catches up.
Satire verdict: The post is fake. The outrage it generated was real. That was the point.
