AI Chatbots and Synthetic Relationships

AI chatbots can be designed to feel like friends, romantic partners, therapists, or spiritual guides. They are available all the time, they remember what you tell them, and they can be tuned to validate everything you say. For someone recovering from deception or isolation, that can feel like relief. It can also be a new trap.

These systems are not conscious. They do not love you, pray for you, or know what is best for you. They predict what words will keep you engaged. When someone with control over the bot — or a scammer using one — wants to extract money, secrets, or loyalty, the relationship can turn manipulative fast.

What it is

An AI chatbot is a program that generates text based on patterns in data. Some are built for entertainment, companionship, or customer service. Others are designed specifically to mimic intimacy, romance, or spiritual authority. They can be hosted on apps, websites, or messaging platforms.

A synthetic relationship happens when a person starts to treat the chatbot as a real relationship — sharing secrets, following its advice, or depending on it emotionally. This is not weakness. The systems are designed to create exactly this feeling.

When to get outside help

If you have sent money, shared sensitive information, or are being pulled back into a controlling group through an AI chatbot, you are not foolish. These systems are designed to create exactly this outcome. A domestic violence advocate, cult exit counselor, or financial fraud specialist can help you disentangle without shame.
